These first visits are very important in getting your new pet off to a good start. Our doctors perform thorough physical examinations, evaluating your pet for congenital or developmental abnormalities.
Exams for any internal or external parasite problems are also conducted. Any problems detected will be thoroughly explained and treatment options outlined. Necessary vaccinations will be also be performed at this time. Our doctors and staff will give you the latest information about diet, training, and preventative care. You will receive handouts to take home, along with samples of puppy or kitten food. We like to see your new puppy or kitten as soon as possible after you bring it home, then at regular intervals until the series of vaccinations are completed. Spaying or neutering is recommended at 6 months of age.
We recommend a complete physical exam for your pet on at least a yearly basis. Your pet ages approximately 5 - 7 "human years" in one calendar year; therefore, a lot can change from year to year, especially as your pet gets older.
Based on examination findings and your pet's individual needs and situation, which you help us to determine, preventative health care recommendations are made. These may include blood tests, urinalysis, fecal tests, exercise advice, dietary changes, nutritional supplements, shampoos, life-style changes, etc.
Veterinary medicine has made great strides in recent years to improve the quality of life for our older pets. We routinely have patients in their late teens and even a few over 20 years old, still doing very well.
At Northgate Animal Hospital, we provide special attention to aging pets focusing on preventative measures and the early detection and treatment of potential health problems.
Older patients commonly experience the same problems that older humans do - heart problems, diabetes, kidney problems, arthritis, dental problems, cancer, hearing and vision loss, senility, etc. Many of these conditions we can treat to extend and improve your pet's quality of life, especially when diagnosed early.

When pets aren't feeling well or have been injured, we are equipped to diagnose and treat most conditions. We will discuss your pet's history, pertinent information, and observations from you that might aid us in determining the problem.
We will also perform any necessary diagnostic procedures such as X-rays, blood tests, etc., to help us determine the best course of treatment for your pet. We routinely consult with board-certified specialists in challenging cases and can facilitate referrals when necessary.
We have a modern, well-equipped surgery suite where our doctors perform a variety of surgical procedures. We have served as the Tri-state area's CO2 laser surgery referral center since 1998.

We also have advanced equipment for anesthesia and monitoring during procedures, including pulse oximetry and ECG. We use integrated pain management to help keep our patients as comfortable as possible.
We recommend pre-anesthetic blood tests on almost all of our surgery and dental patients. Our in-house laboratory enables us to have results in just minutes for routine tests. We also utilize a national veterinary laboratory, when needed, for specialized testing.
Dental care is more than preventing bad breath and loose teeth! It is important for your pet's overall health because dental disease can damage other organs such as the heart and kidneys. In addition to our wide variety of tartar control products, routine dental cleanings help ensure good oral health. Pets are placed on gas anesthesia while a veterinary staff member removes tooth tartar with an ultrasonic dental scaler, then polishes the teeth. Gum pocket depth is measured and a fluoride rinse administered. Our veterinarians will do a complete oral exam and perform any necessary extractions or surgeries.
Our modern X-ray machine is powerful enough to take excellent quality films of even extremely large dogs with minimal exposure to radiation.
Our automatic processor ensures clear, quality films. Within minutes, we can have your pet's X-rays taken, processed and ready for interpretation by our doctors.
Our veterinarians use special instruments to evaluate several diseases of the eyes. Using a state-of-the-art device called a "Tonopen", we are able to accurately measure your pet's intraocular pressure for diseases such as glaucoma using this quick and painless procedure. We use this diagnostic test any time we have a patient with a "red eye".
We also recommend screening tests for the 42 breeds prone to primary glaucoma such as Basset Hounds, Cocker Spaniels, Beagles, Toy Poodles, Dalmatians, Boston Terriers, Siberian Huskies, and Persian & Siamese cats.
